Is it somewhat counterintuitive that demand for recycled raw materials - like newspaper, plastic, aluminum - would plummet in a recession? This is exactly what’s happening. Recyclables are piling up and outgrowing storage capacities. Suppliers can’t unload them, even though prices are at rock bottom. (For example, paper went from $150/ton down to $60/ton.) Let’s hope that this once thriving domestic industry makes its way back. Soon.
